Three clarification phrases that keep a German conversation moving

New speakers often learn Ich verstehe nicht—I do not understand—and stop there. A more specific request gives the other person something useful to do.

Ask for repetition

Könnten Sie das bitte noch einmal sagen? means “Could you please say that again?” It suits appointments and unfamiliar people. In a casual exchange, Noch einmal, bitte can be enough.

Ask for a slower version

Könnten Sie bitte etwas langsamer sprechen? asks the speaker to slow down a little. Listen again immediately; people often return to their natural speed after one sentence.

Confirm the piece that matters

For a time, repeat what you heard: Um fünfzehn Uhr dreißig? For an address, ask War das Hausnummer vierzehn? A targeted confirmation is easier for both people than restarting the whole explanation.

Make the phrases automatic

Say each phrase aloud until it does not require careful assembly. Then practise after a burst of German audio. The small stress of switching from listening to asking is part of the skill.

Clarification language is not merely emergency vocabulary. It signals attention and lets a conversation continue in German even when your understanding is partial.
